It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood. And since it looks like we aren’t likely to get any relief from this drought, the beautiful weather is here to stay for a while. What can we do to get active outdoors when it’s beautiful outside? A whole lot, as it turns out, if you’re lucky enough to live in the Sacramento area.
Getting outside to do something fun with the family is easy. The hard part is trying to narrow down your list of outings when there is so much fun to be had so close to home. Here’s some ideas to get you started:
1. Float Down the River
Ahhh, a great way to cool off in the summertime. Even with water levels low, there are still stretches of the river that are ripe for rafting. You can go kayaking, white water rafting, or grab a tube and leisurely float the day away. Get with one of the companies that offer guided rafting excursions or rides back to your car when you’re done tubing.
2. Bike the American River Trail
You can walk, run, or bike the American River Trail when the weather is nice this summer, and the scenery couldn’t be better along this route. The trail winds 32 miles from the heart of Sacramento’s downtown area all the way up to Folsom. Sign up for a cycling event or train for a Sac area event favorite like Eppie’s Great Race.
3. Hit the Links
Sacramento has tons of great golf courses, and when the weather gets nice, they fill up with eager golfers ready to swing at a few tees before relaxing in the clubhouse. Many courses offer golf lessons and camps for kids so you can enjoy a game of golf while the next generation hone their skills on the green.
Funderland is the most fun you can have with the family if you’re in the mood for an amusement park setting. Rides, games, and live performances keep everyone entertained all day long. And if anyone kids happens to have a birthday this summer, check out their party packages for a memory they won’t forget.
5. Take an Alopex Eco Adventure
Alopex is a company that takes small groups on big adventures. They offer guided trips with an emphasis on learning, fun, culture, and recreation. In the Sacramento area you can take a kayaking tour of Gold Country or even visit the Sac Prohibition Brewery.
6. Cruise the Sacramento Zoo
If walking is more your style, but you’re craving some unique entertainment, take the family and head down to the Sacramento Zoo. During the summer months you can take in the sights under the stars with their Overnight Safari experience. Small groups of 2 or more can camp out with the animals under the warm summer sky, and complimentary breakfast and dinner are included.
7. Discover Fairytale Town
After you’ve explored all there is to see over at the Zoo, pop over to Fairytale Town and let the kids run wild. Fairytale Town isn’t just a popular play area for kids. There’s a live performance art side to this city treasure, and entertainment ranges from puppet shows to concerts. If you have kids under 10, don’t miss this classic Land Park destination!
