Fighting Illness: Sweat it Out or Rest?

Did you know that your workouts are not only keeping your body fit, but are also triggering a rise in your immune system cells, if you are exercising at least 30 minutes/day?

Most of the time, when we do get sick, our natural response is to immediately demand rest for our bodies. Nobody feels like exercising when they are sick, however, unless you are completely bed-bound (fever, joint/muscle pain, vomiting/ diarrhea etc.), exercise is the best medicine.

LOW intensity, LOW heart rate cardio during the first few days of illness can make you feel better and will stimulate your immune system to speed recovery and get you back on track. While you are ill, avoid heavy strength training, high intensity cardio, interval training, or exercising in extreme temperatures. If you have severe symptoms (fever, joint/muscle pain, vomiting/diarrhea etc.), it is best to hold off on exercise and rest. As always, listen to your body and let your symptoms be your guide.

Exercises To Consider When You Are Sick:

  1. Walking
  2. Low intensity jogging
  3. Biking
  4. Swimming
  5. Yoga
  6. Pilates

Natural Ways To Strengthen Your Immune System:

  • Avoid sugars and grains, which cause imbalance of beneficial gut flora
  • Get at least 8 hours of sleep each night for repair and recovery
  • Get 15 minutes of sunlight each day for a boost in vitamin D
  • Exercise 30 min/day (Keep in mind, moderate intensity for 30 minutes boosts immunity, prolonged vigorous intensity depresses the immune system).
  • Manage your stress levels (stress weakens your immune system)
  • Get regular chiropractic adjustments

Several studies have added to our understanding of the biological benefits of chiropractic adjustments in the improvement of specific immune responses which release anti-inflammatory chemicals, increase  antibody and white blood cell production, all helping to fight off the threat of illness. Although more research is needed, current evidence suggests chiropractic is able to promote positive changes in the immune system and reduce inflammation and pain, thus supporting overall health and wellness.

If you have not already experienced the many benefits of chiropractic care and would like to get started, please give our office a call, we would love to be of help.
