Shake It Off With Zumba

blog-thumb_member-perspectiveWhen I was younger, I loved to dance.  Dancing with girlfriends, competitions, cheerleading and dance team were activities I regularly participated in.  Now as an adult, dancing is something I usually do while holding a child and trying to soothe him into a better mood.  Dancing in public is not a normal activity for me.

Enter Zumba with friends.  I was invited to do Zumba at Cal Fit with a girlfriend a few weeks ago.  Unsure how it would go, I decided to join her in this new adventure… dancing in public… for a workout.

My first impression was that the majority of people there were regulars and knew everyone.  They were super friendly, offering hugs (Yes! Hugs to this newbie Zumba goer), advice, and good tidings.  I was instructed to just keep moving and to have fun.

I will be honest, there was many times I felt lost and unsure of the moves.  It is just my personality of wanting to know the moves correctly.  Once I let go of my perfectionist behavior, I was able to put a smile on my face and shake it off.

I realized that everyone was pretty much doing their own version of the choreography.  The ones who were really busting a move were the ones who regularly attend Zumba and memorized the songs.  They also got the best sweaty workout in.

The few times I have danced in Zumba, I learned a few valuable life lessons:

  1. In order to improve (with anything in life) you must practice it… often.
  2. Practice does NOT mean perfect.  Even the best (in whatever area you are working on) fail at times… practice for progress… not perfection.
  3. Dance like nobody is looking… chances are no one really is paying THAT MUCH attention to you in the first place.  Do your own thing.  Shake it.  Work it.  Be you!
  4. Have fun! If you are having fun (with whatever you are doing) it makes it more enjoyable.
  5. Keep moving.  Even if you are uncomfortable and unsure of what your steps are… keep moving!  Don’t give up.

I have enjoyed shaking it off with Zumba.  If we are in the same Zumba class together, you will see many phases on my face and body position: confusion, happiness, exhaustion, elation {that I figured it out} and determination.

Try something new that challenges you.  Even if you are not good at it… sometimes being stretched thing is a good thing.  I have enjoyed trying something new and out of my comfort zone.  Zumba is a fun way to sneak in exercise and fun!

Have you tried Zumba!?
