Exercise Goal: Weight Loss and Managing Chronic Pain
On December 29, 2016, I made the choice to turn my life around when I walked into the Carmichael club. I knew I had to do something because I was 42 years old, overweight and very unhealthy. I had struggled with my weight off and on since childhood and had minimal successes with weight loss over the years because I was never able to fully commit to making the lifestyle changes necessary to sustain my weight loss.
I hit my heaviest weight after the birth of my second child in 2012. I had given up hope and I believed and accepted that I was destined to live an unhealthy life which included pre-diabetes, fatty liver disease, sore knees, hips, back, feet and ankles. On this fateful day, I met Personal Trainer, Travis and after my initial assessment with Travis, I purchased one month of personal training.
I wanted to see if one-on-one training was a worthy investment. After that first month of training, I saw results and it was the motivation I needed to make the sacrifice to purchase the largest personal training package.
When I first started training, I could barely get through two express sessions (25 minutes each) per week. Prior to working with Travis, I had never really exercised or lifted weights and I knew nothing about proper form or technique. As time went on and I built up endurance and strength, my workouts became longer and more challenging.
Working Around Injuries
By the time Travis left Cal-Fit in July, I was doing four standard sessions (50 minutes each) per week plus two days of exercising on my own. The commitment, discipline and dedication paid off because during 2017, I had lost 50 pounds and 30 inches! All of this, despite having hip problems due to an old surgery, a tear in my rotator cuff, bursitis and tendinitis - and as sore ankle due to Achilles tendinitis. A good trainer has the knowledge on how to work around the injuries and help to strengthen these weak, injured areas without causing further damage.
I am sad that Dana and Travis are no longer employed at the CFF Carmichael club, but I continue to share my progress with them. I am now working with my new trainer Ernie and the Fitness Manager, Trey. They have invested so much into my programming and have been great sources of support and accountability. My workouts continue to challenge me, and I am always amazed what I am capable of.
There are many benefits to having a personal trainer, but one of the benefits I appreciate the most is the fact that I know that Ernie will always push me harder than I can push myself. He continually gives me opportunities to prove to myself that I am stronger than I believe and he helps to reinforce that I can do anything I put my mind to.
Being Active and Playing With My Kids
Five months into my journey, I was able to play with my son at his 8th birthday party at one of those bouncy places. It was the first time I was able to participate because before t I didn’t have the strength to pull myself up the ladder. I finally had the mobility and energy to volunteer in my 5-year-old's kindergarten class during outdoor activities.
There are days you will feel like a rock-star and that you’re unstoppable. But there are days you will want to quit and you may even cry. I still have these hard days, but this journey has taught me that anytime I fall, I need to dig deep and believe in myself, get back up and keep going. I hope that you fight for yourself and your health.

Personal Training? Worth Every Penny
For those of you who are wondering whether it’s a worthy investment to purchase personal training, I can assure you that it’s worth every penny. Yes, it can be pricey depending on the package you purchase, but you can’t put a price on health and wellness. Because of my weight loss, I am no longer pre-diabetic and my cholesterol and liver enzymes are back in healthy range. My lab results are better now at age 43, then they were in my thirties.
I have fibromyalgia, but with the weight loss there is less pressure on my joints. I haven’t had a flare up in months. I am going through menopause and hormonal problems are weight loss obstacles. I also have two young children, I'm a soccer mom, and a husband with a demanding career that takes him away from the home for long hours.
My fitness journey is not over but I am a living example that it’s never too late to take control of your life and turn things around. Remember, you have the power within to makebetter choices - and finish strong. Whenever I forget that, I can count on Ernie to guide me.
