Yoga for Weight Loss and Other Benefits

Yoga really is the new black, in case you haven’t yet heard. And the best part is – with the wide variety of yoga classes and styles offered today, there is bound to be something to inspire you to “OM” and downward dog from time-to-time.

But beware, yoga can be quite addicting in all the right ways. From encouraging weight loss and self-awareness to decreasing likelihood of depression and stress, there are undeniable reasons why you should become your own best yogi and find the style of yoga that best fits your lifestyle and health goals.

TYPES OF YOGA

Hatha – for beginners

Hatha refers to any yoga practice that combines poses with breathing techniques, with the primary goal being to develop flexibility and balance, and to integrate breath into every movement. Hatha classes are generally relaxing and restorative in nature.

Vinyasa – for weight loss

Vinyasa-style yoga (a.k.a. power yoga) tends to be fast-paced requiring you to move continuously throughout class. Vinyasa sequences generally include the sun salutation followed by a flowing series of lunging, bending, and stretching poses, both seated and while standing, to develop strength, flexibility, and balance.

Ashtanga – for experienced yogis

Ashtanga is a physically challenging style of yoga that consists of consistent sequences of poses including sun salutations, backbends, and inversions.

Other popular styles of yoga include Bikram (for building flexibility), Iyengar (for back/neck pain) and Kundalini (for a spiritual experience).
